go kimi (Saturday March 5th, 2005 - 11:24)

category: mmhuh?

This is the point in the year (or did it happen some weeks ago) when I start rambling on about formula 1 in every post until mid-October. The Melbourne GP weekend is under way and the first qualifying is coming up in a matter of hours with a soggy circuit. Not knowing some of the new drivers I’ll decide on my top list for 2005 in a few races time after I’ve seen everyone do a few moves on each other but Kimi is of course #1; following him is a little mingling of Mark Webber, Juan Pablo Montoya, Mr Square (now Hairy) Jaw Love-Bucket aka David Coulthard and the indie-styled godly Jacques Villeneuve.

For anyone who finds themselves staring at F1 footage for the first time due to ten‘s lovely coverage this weekend – Kimi is the one in the black, white and silver McLaren Mercedes car with a number 9 painted on the nose. If there’s a few of them racing past the tv screen quickly then you can pick Kimi’s race car by noticing that the thin flat structure at the top of the car (where a camera is often housed I believe) is red; Montoya’s seemed to be black yesterday but this morning looked silver (maybe they change them depending on the session); yesterday I noticed that their third driver Pedro de la Rosa’s was yellow. Last year Kimi had red rearview mirrors as well but so far they’ve looked black in Melbourne.

The nice thing about managing an F1 site at work is that I had reason to take my other bits of work downstairs to the tv room and watch Friday practice.. research I tell you! Nice to put the feet up after a week that’s seemed to last a month.

Anyway.. no gigs so far this week. Haven’t scrolled the papers thoroughly to see what’s on tonight but doubt I’ll get out anywhere and I’ll just have a quiet one instead. Oxford Street is going to be a mess of glitter and feathers and I noticed yesterday that my local supermarket has a 3 x 4 foot display of ky tubes next to the registers for that last minute purchase for mardi gras.

In forth coming weeks.. still looking at Bitchfest at the Marquee on Friday 11th. Abdoujaparov (featuring Fruitbat from Carter USM) are at the Hopetoun on Tuesday 15th, then the Excelsior on the 16th and 17th – last time I saw them was a few years ago in London at the Mean Fiddler with Jim’s Super Stereoworld when they combined and played some Carter songs.. mmm!

Your driver choice is, of course, entirely wrong. JV, lovely though he ought to be, is really just a pompous arrogant twat, and his crap result is all that he deserved. Montoya’s almost as bad. The funny thing about this year though is that David Coulthard, who I have always hated with a vengeance, seems to have chilled out to the point where I could almost get to like the guy.

As for my top however-many… I dunno, Button has to be #1 though I don’t think he stands much chance this year. Following him, I’ll be rooting for some random assortment of Trulli, Fisichella, Alonso, Webber, dammit maybe even Coulthard. And I have to admit that, bored as I will be to see them win any more races, I still have a lot of admiration for Schumacher and Barichello.

yay for f1 with an aussie driver in a competitive car 🙂 would have been even better if webber had got a podium, but it doesn’t really matter. staggered out of bed on sunday and flicked the tv on exactly at the start, so missed the reason raikonnen (sp?) started in pit lane. nice to watch him chase shumie through the field though 🙂

fyi, the camera housing up top is coloured red (looks more like flouro pink to me) for the primary car, yellow for the third car and whatever other colour the team sees fit for the second car.

For those at home, Kimi = red, Nutsack = black, third driver (Alex/Pedro) = yellow.
