hoey, saturdays and [cough] (Sunday February 20th, 2005 - 21:04)

category: mmhuh?

Last night it was the Hopetoun again (what happened to that plan to go and discover new venues?) – I was carded at the door and the bouncer cheerfully said “You don’t look that old.” Do I look 16 then? Hm. I’m not sure if this is a good or a bad thing.

Phonograph up first – very pleasant and happy seeming trio, joking along between songs and while one of them tuned to the wrong song. Good looking and a good brit-poppy sound. I’ll definitely check them out again.

Next up vanlustbader who smoked my socks. Jesus and Mary Chain meets Primal Scream meets the Rolling Stones (the lead singer looks like Mick Jagger, and I think that’s a compliment). Swagger rockin’ style. Powerful vocals. Two favourite tunes were All You People and Scorcher both of which can be found for download on their site. I was disappointed to not hear All She Sees is Stars which I fell in love with while checking out their site in the afternoon (or was I too engrossed in my camera? Nah, not possible, that song’s too good to miss).

Riff Random (whose website I understand is due to be updated this week) closed up the evening in similar style, loud, rocking, crowd bopping. The nice blue lights had been turned off so photos were harder.. hrmf.

Off to the buggy jar, bumping in to various sorts and heard that the Lamento Suite are playing next Saturday. More chances to take pictures of a good looking band.

It’s been a tough week. Work and a stupid summer flu and cough. Child safety lids on cough medicine bottles are evil to an already weakened individual.

Four months after a friend de-plugged my bass I finally got along to the Bass Player in Annandale to buy a shiny new output jack (I guess I’ll paint it black to make it match the old one). Can’t wait to get it working again.. something so soothing about sitting around on a late night just playing little riffs.

Picked up Ian McEwan‘s Saturday on (would you guess it?) Saturday. Didn’t know he had a new novel coming out so it was a nice little surprise.

Another long week ahead..

Vanlustbader. Cool sounding band. They are right up my street too. Big thumbs up from London Town.

I’ll leave you two lovely people to vanlustbader. I’m more interested in Riff Random. Great photos, Niina. They look much more interesting. Plus, their debut EP is supposedly being co-produced by ex-JAMC/Freeheat bassist/guitarist Ben Lurie according to the official site! Excellent. Want to hear what they sound like sooner than later.

Get well soon, young webmistress. And don’t worry about looking and feeling younger than your actual age. You saw what I looked like. Nobody ever believes that I’m 30-something ;-). Weird at first but you get used to it.

Thanks for keeping me up on what’s going on Down Under.

Take care of yourself, ‘Candy girl.

The Riff Random site’s out of date; Ben Lurie didn’t work on the final product so don’t go chasing it just for that fact. However hopefully when their new site’s up there’ll be some sounds on there so you can find out what they sound like.

Well, you used to look about 12 when you worked for us, so 16 is probably about right.
