I’m watching the Oscars and am puzzled by the sequence of images just shown of people who have died in the previous year. Despite the normal morose calm at funerals, at the Oscars, they receive applause. But it bothers me that you can audibly hear the rise and fall of applause depending upon the audiences knowledge of the celebrity that’s passed. Could they not just remain silent and allow those that did know the deceased a sense of knowledge that they’ve been acknowledged?
