in the black (Monday July 31st, 2006 - 23:51)

category: mmhuh?

Things you learn when your apartment’s blacked out:

1) You can be envious of apartments that have their lights on.
2) It feels colder when it’s dark.
3) Your gas cooktop needs electricity to spark itself to life.
4) The glow of a mobile phone screen helps to find things in the dark (such as a torch).
5) An itty bitty torch isn’t much use in the dark (must buy a bigger torch).
6) It’s not possible to read by candle light (or perhaps my candles aren’t special enough to emit enough light).
7) You’re obviously getting better at your guitar because you can play your favourite songs without being able to see your fingers.

One thing you realise after the lights come back on:

You used to live in a city in the South Pacific that relied on hydro-electricity but suffered from drought (whose brilliant idea was that?).  When the water didn’t flow, for months on end the electricity was rationed so you dealt with sweltering heat, scheduled blackouts several times a week, and waited on water trucks to fill the tanks with questionably coloured water.  But that was life.  So 2 hours without electricity isn’t much to get worked up about.  Some people get none.

london (Monday July 24th, 2006 - 20:58)

category: mmhuh?

A well deserved day off work and I continued playing around with my old Sony DV camera finding footage from a late night bus ride in February 2000 when my friend Nicki and I were both foreigners in a strange town going round and round and round. I’ve been missing London a great deal lately: sharing beers with friends, weddings, people celebrating birthdays and the ever amazing Jim Reid playing brilliant gigs. So to reminisce…

feet (Sunday July 23rd, 2006 - 22:35)

Quiet Sunday afternoon where I plugged in for a little while and squished together a quick (read: rough) recording. I had a fun idea for a video, but with a short attention span of late, after shooting it I lost enthusiasm for cutting up the footage, editing, and synchronising.. so I just put it on fast forward.

oh lordi lordi! (Saturday May 27th, 2006 - 11:59)

category: mmhuh?

The Finnish town of Rovaniemi, home of Lordi, will name a new square in a redevelopment of the city centre after the Eurovision 2006 winning band. The press release even includes a quote from the official Santa Claus: “Lordi’s victory shows us that with hard work and belief in your own abilities even the greatest dreams come true.”

You’ve got to love the passion of the Finns.

(thanks for the article link Zoe!)

category: mmhuh?

dear mr sumption,

I’m a busy little thing at the moment, thus the lack of any attempts at wit or oddness or stupid photographs of earless bunnies on these little pages. On the weekend I bought a new toy for my guitar so I made some noise and video for you (I hope it works, you need Real Player to check it out). I’m such a genius.

your sincerely,
niina

ps. do ya get it? sumption, gumption, haha.

go google (Tuesday March 21st, 2006 - 20:26)

category: mmhuh?

The Sydney Morning Herald carried an article today titled “Website sues Google over ‘death penalty’” that made me grumble at the ridiculous state of the world.

A company is suing Google because their Web site’s ranking was removed which meant that it did not come up (or perhaps came up last) for searches related to the content on their site. So? They complain that “It’s akin to cutting off the flow of oil, communication or oxygen.” What rubbish!

Google’s search functionality is a free service. They make no promises that a Web site gets listed, let alone highly ranked, for a search. How can anyone come up with the idea of suing something that is free?

The whole stunt must be a bit of an expensive PR exercise. A company with a good enough reputation would never have to sink so low as to complain over their Google rank – everyone would be visiting them through prior knowledge of the site, word of mouth, or links from other relevant sites (which in turn would boost their ranking unless they’re doing naughty things to fake their importance of course).

SEO bugs me, people who sue over nothing bug me more [Niina wanders off grumbling quietly..]

sport and sport (Monday March 20th, 2006 - 22:47)

category: mmhuh?

Firstly, a little note of congratulations to Ryan Pini for scoring Papua New Guinea’s first gold medal in swimming at the Commonwealth Games for the 100m butterfly. Brilliant!

Secondly, I have every faith that Kimi will win the Melbourne grand prix: watch him qualify in P1 then zoom away in to the distance to keep away from the silly little scraps of cars out for a bit of afternoon dodgems. I’d been hesitant to say anything after his third placing in Bahrain.. I knew it wouldn’t last (through no fault of his own of course). It is Kimi’s year. It is. I promise.
