getting educated (Saturday December 2nd, 2006 - 20:11)

category: mmhuh?

This week I began an online university course to see if I could keep up with it in between work and life. Some people are racing ahead with the modules, faster than the recommended pace, and there seems to be 100+ of us trying to have some form of discussion or another.

Trying to catch-up with the discussions today I saw this rather unfortunate comment from the tutor in response to a thread I started about an IP address in a self-test not matching the real-life scenario:

“as stated in a previous post (don’t ask me where -I am as confused as everyone else :) the self test answers may be a bit out of date so if they don’t match and you appear to be correct - you probably are!”

Erm.. big confidence boost that is.

More on what I’m studying, why, and whether it’s teaching me anything useful will be sprouted on another day.

Canberra calling (Tuesday November 7th, 2006 - 21:16)

category: mmhuh?

I’m going to try and run away to Canberra on Friday to meet my little niece so I’ll stay the night and try and get in a little sight-seeing before heading back to Sydney.

Has anyone visiting this little ramble of mine ever been to Canberra? Any suggestions on what to do apart from look at Lake Burley Griffin, check out Parliament House, and visit the National Gallery? Being book and library obsessed I’ll try to take in the National Library as well. I’ve had a look at the gig guide for Friday night but it looks a little.. tiny and no names that I recognise. I can’t go to a town and not see some music.. can I?

Help!

I can’t live without you (Saturday November 4th, 2006 - 17:24)

category: mmhuh?

It’s been a busy week. In between work and life I’ve..

  • been to 7 gigs in 8 days;
  • snapped away at 5 venues (Spectrum (three times), Candy’s Apartment, the Loft, the Hopetoun Hotel, the Metro);
  • and seen 18 bands (Warhorse, Batrider, Snowman, Bridezilla, The Ghosts, Mercy Arms, Red Riders, Weather Underground, Bingo Steve and the Magic Markers, Sol Levy, Beau Monde, Hand Me My Jetpack, Days Like Stars, Jakob, Soft Tigers, Shaky Hands (twice), the Spazzys, You Am I).

That’s probably the longest stint of (almost) solid gigging I’ve ever done in one city. However my more concerted efforts must be (wait a sec while I go searching for gig dates..):

  • 9 gigs in 13 days in 13 cities across the width of America (JAMC 1998, and I saw Mercury Rev at 6 of those gigs as the support)
  • 8 gigs in 10 days in 6 cities across east and west coast America (Freeheat 2000)
  • 4 gigs in 4 days in 4 cities in 2 countries across Denmark and Sweden (Freeheat 2002)

What have I realised by figuring out these silly figures? I’m sorely overdue for some road-tripping! If only Jim Reid would get himself over to Australia for some shows.

no flash, no songs (Sunday October 29th, 2006 - 23:32)

category: mmhuh?

Something special for a Sunday to receive a last minute phone call about a gig by one of my faves making it three times in a week-and-a-half that the Red Riders (ooh they have a new site up) have treated Sydney to a free gig. The Loft is hardly a gigging venue but it was fun to see how the other half lives (okay, I’ve been there before but it does send shivers through me each time I visit). The lights were low and red (I should have guessed) so I just took a couple for memories sake to store on the hard drive and then settled back to listen to them tickle my socks and put a smile on my face.

A couple of the best photographers in town were there anyway, armed with their flash attachments so I’m sure their beautiful pictures will be found around somewhere soon.

.. Aah I’m still smiling.

my love is stronger than your love (Saturday October 21st, 2006 - 16:12)

category: mmhuh?

Those dashing young men known as Red Riders played their album launch in-store gig at Red Eye Records this afternoon to an appreciative and jiggling audience. I picked up the album, headed home, copied it to my iPod and went grocery shopping with Replica Replica playing in my ears, trying so very hard not to burst in to song while bagging some tomatoes. The album sounds more wonderful than I hoped.

I fear I degenerated in to a giggly teenager and I believe for the first time in my life I got something signed. Can that be? I’ve had a few signed CDs sent to me by bands without my having asked. I’ve bought a few books that I’ve taken home and found that they’d been signed. But I can’t think of a time I’ve actually asked for something to be signed.. strange.. you should try something new every day I guess.

Here’s the front cover then of the Slide in Next to Me 7″ they gave away with the album. Bless their cotton socks! Alex says that playing it at 33 rpm makes it sound like My Bloody Valentine and Adrian showed that he appreciates the Jesus and Mary Chain (but.. my love is stronger than your love!).

melting point (Sunday September 24th, 2006 - 13:00)

melting candle

We’re not even a third of the way through Spring and it’s over 30°. I’d left a candle on my balcony table but this morning when I went out to look at the world I found it collapsed over itself, partially melted.

[Edit at 5:00pm] This afternoon, again on the balcony, the smell of bushfires reached me here in the city.  It’s going to be a long painful summer.

half of Ten (Tuesday August 8th, 2006 - 22:35)

category: mmhuh?

Free-to-air TV in Australia has it’s ups and downs. I’ve grumbled to myself before about why on earth channel Ten thinks it can feed us 3 episodes of the Simpsons in one night. Not that there’s anything wrong with the Simpsons, but surely there are other programs that could be thrown in to the mix.

Tonight’s schedule for Ten is as follows:

Ten TV guide

4 episodes of the Simpsons, and one episode of Futurama. Hmm.

Try another channel? Well Seven seems to be showing medical reality shows and medical dramas; Nine is showing something-or-other-on-ice; and ABC and SBS are a little heavy for an evening on a couch with a headache. I’m a hard woman to please.  Out come the DVDs of Northern Exposure (one of the brilliant TV series of the 1990s, a wonderful time for television)…

teachng rox! (Sunday August 6th, 2006 - 14:59)

category: mmhuh?

The form for the Australian 2006 Census is currently being delivered around the country side for completion on August 8. My form appeared in the mailbox over the weekend and I wonder if I’m the only one who sees humour, and a statement about the quality of education, in the “How to write your answers” section on the front-page:
